17: The Three Students

“Ingenious theory, you must admit, Jefferson,” Mac said on the way back to campus.

“I’m not in the mood to admit anything.”

“Grant has always been very supportive of me,” Banfield volunteered.

Grant? I wish this woman were a fictional character, and that I created her.

“You know our interim president, then?” I said.

She nodded. “He was Air Force, you know. We met at a wounded warrior event, and a few times since.”

“Well, that won’t hurt.”

“Hurt what?”

“Has it not occurred to you, Aurelia, that we are in the awkward position of interviewing our temporary superior in the context of a murder investigation?” Mac said.

“It’ll be fine.”

“We don’t actually have to tell him Gibbons is giving him the hairy eyeball, do we?” I asked.

“Really, it’ll be fine.”

As (good) luck would have it, I already had an appointment that day to meet GK outside the offices of WIJC, our campus radio station. Tony Lampwicke, a long-time SBU employee, was going to record an interview for the weekly Crosscurrents program. Given GK’s deep interest in the investigation, it was only natural that Mac and Banfield came along to give him an update. At least, I hoped that’s what he would think.

We were early for the WIJC appointment, but GK was earlier. We found him pacing in front of the glassed-in offices of the station, wearing an expensive-looking black alpaca overcoat.

He didn’t need any introductions.

“Aurelia!” he said. “Good to see you.” He gave her a handshake and a quick, one-armed hug. “And you’re Sebastian McCabe! People call you Mac, don’t they?” Most people. GK eyed the crutches. “What happened to your—”

“A mere trifle,” I assured him.

“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Mac. I have a standing order at Mo’s Mysteries & Marvels for all your books as they roll out. I’m Damon Devlin’s biggest fan.”

Not while Sebastian McCabe is alive, you’re not.

“I am honored.” Mac preened, tried to look modest (not his best trick), accepted a Cuban cigar from GK, and made the cigar disappear by sleight of hand all within the space of maybe thirty seconds. Good thing he moved fast, because GK was ready for business. He didn’t spare the hokey magic trick more than a passing chuckle.

“What can you tell me about the murder?” he asked. “I’m sure Tony won’t mind if I’m a few minutes late.”

I’m sure. Tony Lampwicke uses bigger words than Mac, and more of them, wrapped up in a cultivated Oxford English accent. He’s from Hamilton, Ohio, about eighty miles up the road from Erin.

“We’ve been busy,” I assured him. “So has Gibbons of the Erin police.”

“Good.”

Not entirely.

“Maybe we’d better go someplace we can talk.”

We found a deserted hallway with a small table and enough chairs, although Mac was squeezed. GK sat across from Banfield, with Mac and me on either side of him. Banfield gave him the lowdown:

“Between the Erin police and us, we talked with his wife, an antagonist on the business faculty, three students with whom he behaved inappropriately, and six local business owners with whom he had invested.
